| In 1961, the Pennsylvania Railroad shops produced the class G39 70 Ton Ore Car to handle the rising flow of iron ore traffic. These ore cars were designed for dumping, and therefore had solid floors and fixed ends. These cars also were utilized to carry scrap metal and coiled steel. After several years of service, some of the cars had their Crown trucks replaced with more modern trucks. This allowed for a capacity increase to 77 tons, and accordingly the cars were given the G39B designation. |
