Logging Camp Car Kit (Wood Kit) A Workshop in
the Woods!
A car like this is just the ticket for tool
storage and light repairs out in the field. The
"shack" gives a guy a warm, covered place to
work and store tools; the bench and racks on the
deck gives him a place to take care of business.
Everything you see pictured (except the track)
is included. This is a wooden craftsman kit,
featuring a combination of laser-cut Kappler
Mill & Lumber Company wood and Kappler strip
wood. This kit is complete, including MacLeod
trucks, PSC brass wheel sets (nice!), and
Foothill Model Works brake beams. Note that both
EH4004 and EH4005 are identical except that
EH4005 has On30 wheel sets plus instructions for
converting the On3 Foothill brake beams to On30.
This kit bristles with details, as you can see,
plus complete underside detail, which you can
partially see. The roof is removable. The
details parts include Evergreen Hill's own white
metal and etched brass parts, plastic and brass
detail parts from Precision Scale Company, and
plastic parts from Grandt Line. Also included is
metal corrugated roofing. Some of the strip wood
is pre-cut, and some is even pre-drilled to
assist you with constructions. The kit also
features over 20 pages of detailed step-by-step
instructions, with photos, plus a color photo of
the completed kit.
The kit is available now for $74.95. Support
your local hobby shop! For those of you that
don't have a local hobby shop or prefer to order
direct, please use our shopping cart feature.
Please note: The On30 version of this kit is
true to the On30 standard, meaning it's an O
scale kit that uses 30" gauge track (which,
coincidentally, is HO scale standard gauge
track. For those of you using Bachmann's On30
locomotives, you know that their equipment is
built to O scale but that the couplers and the
coupler heights are at HO scale. Our On30 cars
will not work directly with their locomotives,
as shipped.
However, you can purchase a kit less trucks and
couplers directly from us, allowing you to use
whatever trucks and couplers appropriate for
your situation. We do not offer this as one of
our standard products, so please give us a
E-Mail to
order.

Barnhart log loaders
were manufactured by the Marion Steam Shovel Co., of Marion,
Ohio. Two models of this loader were manufactured, the 'Model -
10', and the 'Model - 12'. The smaller model #10 loader, had a
25' long oak boom, a double 6-1/2" x 8" hoisting engine, and a
36" x 96" vertical boiler; and sold for approximately $3,500.
The larger model #12, had a 23'-9" long steel boom, double
7-1/2" x 8" hoisting engine, and a 50" x 82" vertical boiler;
and sold for around $4,700. The model #12's lift capacity was
claimed to be 9-10 tons, with a maximum single log handling
capacity of approximately 1500bf. The Barnhart was noted to be
more expensive to operate, and keep in working order, than some
other loaders.
The loaders rode on either permanently affixed, or temporary
tracks on top of the flatcars or log cars. Where permanent
tracks were used, the rails were laid only the length of the car
bed, so as to prevent binding in sharp curves; the loader moved
across/between cars via the use of of a transfer rail, or a
"shoe fly" (an inverted "U" shaped piece of steel), placed
across the space between cars. Temporary tracks where used, were
built in three equal sections; where the loader rested on one,
the second spanned the gap between cars, and the third sat on
the following empty car. As the loader proceeded down the train,
it moved to the piece on the following car, then lifted the two
pieces in front, and places them behind...again, one spanning
the gap between cars, and the other resting on the following
empty.
When loading, the loader was initially positioned on the second
to last car, or second car behind the locomotive, and then began
by loading either the first, or last, car respectively; then
working it's way down the string of empties. The loader moved
itself along the train by the use of a drum mounted cable, which
is attached via a hook to a car behind it, and then winched
itself backwards.
HO Scale
Barnhart Log Loader
International Hobby Corp
 |
|
Highly versatile, they could
not only load logs onto trains but also drag
rough timber up to the loading site.
Additionally, Barnhart's often found themselves
operating in "wreck service" as derailments were
a common occurrence in timber railroading.
"Shooflies", inverted U-shaped iron sheets, were
used to bridge the gaps between cars. These
useful loaders are equally at home sitting on a
platform, loading dock or at ground level |
