This motor replacement using NWSL 2231 size motor provides performance improvement for this fine model - smoother,
quieter, slower, more powerful operation. We here describe the general method we used which can be accomplished in
about 60 minutes if proper materials and tools are on hand.
Tools required: Miniature screwdrivers
Skill required: This job assumes you have reasonable proficiency in soldering and disassembly/ assembly
of mechanical devices. If not, your learning experience here will be valuable despite
problems you may encounter in achieving quick and satisfactory completion.
Time required: About 60 minutes (plus cure time for bonding agent and sealant)
Parts required: NWSL kit #2671-4 or #2672-6 or #2673-6 or #2674-6 according to your preference
Silicon sealant (sold at hardware stores as bathtub caulk, window caulk, etc.)

1. Remove power truck from locomotive chassis.
2. Place truck in box or tray to keep parts together as you work. Remove 4 screws, lift off truck top (truck bolster) with kingpin.
3. Lift motor/ bearings/ worms assembly out of truck motor well (caution - keep the motor bearing springs from wandering off),
unsolder wiring connections as necessary.
4. Note the motor terminal wire at the wheel wipers may be merely a friction fit and
can be pulled out. Retain wheel wipers in place for future use.
5. Insert new motor/bearings/worms assembly in place. Replace top/truck
bolster and set screws but do not tighten.
6. Working from truck bottom, remove 4 screws holding bottom
retainer cover in place.
7. Lift old wheel sets out and insert new geared wheel sets
(make sure both insulated wheels are on the same
side AND the square axle bearings drop into slot properly)
8. Install the bottom cover and loosely fit the 4 screws.
9. Decide your wiring plan—If your truck has the sprung wheel wipers, pry them upward slightly adequate to slip the motor terminal
wire (or extension) under the wiper body and press it down to ‘trap’ the wire. For more reliable operation (power pickup),
make sure all wipers in a truck are collecting power and run a length of wire to be connected to the other truck. You may want
to add the kit phosphor bronze ‘T’ wheel wipers (especially if you are powering a previously un-powered truck) - just screw
them to the lower truck frame so that each end wipes the back of a wheel and wire to the motor as necessary.
10. Apply power to test the operation of the truck. If it runs okay, then progressively secure the bottom and top screws, backing
off if/when a bind develops (cause motor to slow or stall) and tweak as necessary for free operation. While the motor usually
lodges in place, if it is not as secure as you prefer, use a dab of silicon sealant at the motor/truck frame side to help assure the
motor will not turn during operation.
11. Reassemble model and test operate the model on powered track. Check operating direction (polarity) against another locomotive;
if wrong, reverse the terminal wiring connections at wiper wires.
12. Lubricate motor and worm shaft bearings with light lubricant such as Labelle #108. If you have interior lighting to hook up -
connect the wiring to the terminal wires between the trucks.
13. Have (more) fun!
